should not be taken as a mistake by John or a falsehood by Jesus, even though John then records that Jesus did go up to the feast (v. 10). [3]

The Greek present tense in v. 8 can legitimately have the sense, “I am not now going,” indicating that Jesus did not go up to the feast in the way the brothers suggested, for they wanted Jesus to manifest himself to his contemporaries for secular reasons. [4]

The force of Jesus’ words here is that he acts solely on the basis of God’s will, not on the suggestions or commands of any human being. Parallels are to be found at 2.4 and 11.6, where Jesus also rejects human authority for what he does.[5]

NET BIBLE

Jesus may simply have been refusing to accompany his brothers with the rest of the group of pilgrims, preferring to travel separately and “in secret” (v. 10) with his disciples.
[7]

Other people have argued that it means that Jesus said that he was not going up to the festival publicly but that did not preclude him from going privately. But Jesus is saying simply: “If I go up with you just now I will not get the opportunity I am looking for. The time is not opportune.” So he delayed his going until the middle of the festival, since to arrive with the crowds all assembled and expectant gave him a far better opportunity than to go at the very beginning. Jesus is choosing his time with careful prudence in order to get the most effective results.[8]

But even if the reading ouk (‘not’) is correct, the difficulty is superficial because the context supplies a condition. Jesus’ response to his brothers is not that he is planning to stay in Galilee forever, but that because his life is regulated by his heavenly Father’s appointments he is not going to the Feast when they say he should. The ‘counsel of the wicked’ (Ps. 1:1) cannot be permitted to set his agenda. His ‘not’ turns down his brothers’ request; it does not promise he will not go to the Feast when the Father sanctions the trip.[9]

Jesus simply says that the brothers should go (the implication being “go now”),22 and he separates himself from them. Moreover, what they are urging him to do is to go up to keep the feast. This Jesus did not not do, neither then nor later. He was absent for a good part of the ceremonies, perhaps for all of them. He went up to give certain teaching, not to observe the feast in the manner of a pilgrim. He is refusing to go up at their request and with a view to accomplishing what they set before him, but he is not refusing to go up to Jerusalem.[10]
