comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.”

I Thessalonians 5:14 NKJV

In the year 1994, the Russian Ministry of Education invited two Americans to teach in Russia. They invited them to teach in several places, one of which was a big orphanage. In the orphanage there were 100 boys and girls, whom either their parents abandoned them or they were mistreated or their parents left them in the care of the government.

The two Americans told the following story in their own words.

“It was near Christmas in 1994, and it was the turn of this orphanage to know the Christmas story for the first time. We told them about Joseph and Mary and their path to Bethlehem and how they did not find room in any inns, and therefore spent the night in a small barn with cows. During the story the boys and their supervisors were very interested and fascinated by the story. Some even sat on the edge of their chairs, and they were trying to memorize every word.

After finishing the story, we gave each child three small pieces of cardboard to create a manger. Also, pieces of yellow tissue I had brought with me, as there wasn’t any colored paper available in the city.

The children carefully cut their yellow tissue and used it to create the hay in the barn. With torn pieces of cloth from clothes an american lady had left for them, they began to create the baby Jesus.

The orphan boys were busy making their mangers, while I walked among them to provide help. Everything was fine until i stood beside a little boy named “Misha”.  he was around six years old and had finished his work. I was surprised to see two babies in his manger.

Immediately, I called the translator to ask the child why there are two children in the manger? The child folded his hands in front of him, whilst looking at the manger he created and started reciting his story, very seriously for a little boy who heard the Christmas story for the first time. He said the events accurately till he got to the part of Virgin Mary having the baby.

Misha began with his new edition of the story. He said, “When the Virgin Mary had the child in the manger, Jesus looked at me and asked if i have any place to live?” I said to him “I do not have a mum nor a dad, so I do not have any place to live”. Jesus then offered for me to stay with him, but I told him that I cannot because I do not have a gift I can give to him.

I wanted strongly to stay with Jesus, so I thought about a gift. I thought that maybe if I warm him up  this may be a good gift so I asked Jesus, “If i warm you up O Jesus, is this going to be a good enough gift?” Jesus said to me,  “This will be the best gift ever“ And so, I came to the manger, and as Jesus said, I can stay with him forever.

When he  finished his story, his eyes filled with tears which fell on his cheeks, he then placed his head on the table and began sobbing for the orphan boy had found someone who did not reject him or treat him badly, someone who will be with him forever.

I’ve learnt it is not what you have in your life, but who is in your life that is important.

This was the story of a 6 year old child who gave Jesus his everything. What will we give to the child in a manger?

Good Morning
